NILES - Discounted bedding and home furnishings store Designer Furniture Warehouse on Thursday will begin liquidation at its Eastwood Mall location as part of its Nov. 13 Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the store announced Tuesday.
DFW, which has serviced central and eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, will close eight of its stores, keeping only a Columbus location open, according to store spokesman Tom Liddell.
The store was founded in 2004 and filed Nov. 13 for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection citing economic pressures caused by the recent recession.
"The company grew quickly from one store in Ohio to over a dozen stores in three states, including Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The fast growth rate, combined with reduced credit lines from cautious vendors, negatively impacted the company's ability to fulfill customer orders on a timely basis," the company said it a prepared statement.
As part of its restructuring, the company received court approval for going-out-of-business / bankruptcy liquidation sales at eight stores.
Other locations include Chillicothe, Heath, Zanesville, New Philadelphia and St. Clairsville, all in Ohio, along with Pleasant Hills and Washington, Pa. locations. Stores in Wexford, Pa., and Huntington, W.Va., already have closed permanently.
The St. Clairsville and Niles locations both are located in shopping malls owned and operated by Youngstown-based Cafaro Company.
A message left seeking comment from a Cafaro spokesman was not immediately returned Tuesday.
