WARREN -- Former Warren G. Harding High School and Youngstown State University football standout Davion Jonte Rogers was one of the two men who suffered major injuries in an overnight shooting.

Rogers, 22, and Jamal Brandon Coleman, 20, were wounded after gunfire erupted at their home on the southwest side early this morning.

Rogers was a linebacker on the 2009 Harding playoff team. He signed a national letter of intent to play for Michigan in 2010. After being red-shirted, he transferred to YSU where he started in 10 of 11 games as a freshman.

Rogers did not return to the Penguins in 2012. No explanation was ever given for his departure.

Officers were dispatched to 2044 Ferndale Ave., S.W. shortly after 1:45 a.m. Initial police scanner traffic indicated one person was shot. A few seconds later, a dispatcher reported that the caller said two had been hit.

Police arriving at the scene asked for two ambulance squads. Coleman was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Rogers to St. Joseph Health Center.

A police report indicates at least one other person lives at the address.

The house is a single-story structure that sits almost across from the intersection of Saratoga Street S.W. near the dead-end of Ferndale.

Updates will be posted when available. Complete coverage will appear in Wednesday's Tribune Chronicle print edition.
