ERIE, Pa. - Girard's Joe Dunn connected with Brian Divido on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 13.3 seconds left to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 22-19 win over Sharon Monday night at snow-covered Erie Veterans Stadium in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs, according to the Tribune Chronicle's news partner, WYTV.
The Tigers took a 19-14 lead late in the third quarter when Da'Mon Rudolph scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. That score was set up by a Trenton Mosley's interception.
The game was supposed to be played Saturday, but Friday's tragedy, in which two students died in a car accident, resulted in the game being moved to Monday.
Corey Swartz and Evan Gill were killed Friday night in a head-on crash. Swartz was driving the SUV and went left of center, striking a pickup truck head-on and killing that driver as well.
Two other Sharon seniors, twin brothers Craig and Greg Osmon, were seriously injured.
During Monday's game, Carnell Hawkins got the Tigers on the board first with a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0. Girard answered back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Joe Dunn. The 2-point conversion have the Yellow Jackets an 8-7 lead.
Sharon recaptured the lead when Da'Mon Rudolph scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 13-8 advantage. Girard's Dunn later put his team back in the lead with a touchdown run in the second quarter. Sharon trailed 14-13 at tha half.
Sharon ends the season with a record of 6-5.
Girard advances to face Greenville in the second round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs next weekend.
