SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. - Robert "Bob" C. Shape, 92, of Sun City Center, Fla., formerly of Warren, died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, of respiratory failure following surgery for a broken hip.
Bob was born in Warren, Aug. 12, 1921, the oldest son of Carl T. and Mildred March Shape.
After graduating from Miami University with a bachelor of arts in accounting and finance in 1942, Bob became a U.S. naval aviator, flying Wildcats and Corsairs in the South Pacific as a member of squadron VC-27, the most successful escort carrier composite squadron in World War II.
After the war, Bob returned home to Warren, where he took over from his father as president of Warren Steel Specialties Corp. until his retirement in 1985, when he and Dotty moved to Sun City Center, Fla.
While in Warren, Bob was active in many civic and commercial activities, including serving as a member of Warren Housing Board, the Board of Trustees of Trumbull Memorial Hospital, a director of Trumbull Savings and Loan, and an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Warren.
In Sun City Center, Bob remained active in many civic organizations and was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
Bob was an avid golfer and he and wife Dotty had the distinction of both having a hole-in-one on the same hole on the same day in different foursomes. Bob also was an expert bridge player and enjoyed playing bridge several times a week. Bob was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Trumbull Country Club of Warren and Caloosa Country Club of Sun City Center, Fla.
A devoted husband, father, sibling and friend, Bob will be missed by all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Beatrice; sister, Ruth (Don) Ray of Riverside, Calif.; brother, Fred (Barbara) Shape of Warren; son, John (Leslie) Shape of Grand Rapids, Mich.; daughter, Nancy (Bill) Buettner of North Olmsted; daughter, Kathryn (Tom) Hedrich of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents of Warren and by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Dotty) Goetz Shape, who died in 2004.
A memorial service for Bob was held Oct. 18 at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center, just a week after Bob had been a member of a well-deserved Honor Flight from Tampa, Fla., to Washington, D.C., to honor his service in World War II.
