Members of Ohio's and Mahoning Valley's delegation in Congress went to Facebook and Twitter today to announce they and their staffs are OK following gunshots at the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan tweeted "My staff and I are accounted for and we are sheltering in my officer per Capitol Police directions. My thoughts & prayers are w/any victims." Ryan, D-Niles, posted the same message on his Facebook page.

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman tweeted "Heard the gunshots & very grateful for the Capitol Police who I saw running to the danger & putting themselves in harm's way."

He immediately followed with "Me and my team in DC are safe. Praying for the victims and their families."

U.S. Reps. Bill Johnson and Dave Joyce also posted they were safe after the shots were fired.

"Our team is safe & accounted for. Thankful for the heroic U.S. Capitol Police," Joyce tweeted.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown tweeted he and his staff were safe.

A statement on his office's website said he was returning to the Hart Senate Office Building from the Capitol, walking with senators Robert P. Casey of Pennsylvania and Jeff Merkley of Oregaon when police cars rushed by, they heard what sounded like gunshots and were told police to take cover behind parked cars.

A few minutes later, Brown said they were told to return to the Capitol Building.

"Today was another reminder of the bravery of police officers and first responders," Brown said in his statement. "I observed Capitol Police officers rushing towards danger while instructing the rest of us to take cover. I thank them and their families for their sacrifice and my thoughts and prayers go out for their safety."
