Recently the District Advisory Council met to elect a new member to the Trumbull County Board of Health. Members of the Board of Health are elected by trustees and mayors of each township, village and certain cities in the county.
Two local physicians were interested in the position. One physician was female, non-white and had a Master of Public Health degree as well as a bachelor degree in business economics. She spoke of the love she has for this community. She also wanted to make our elected officials accountable for their words and actions. The other physician was male. In his introduction he stated "Many of the places that you people come from, either I have never heard of them or, I certainly have not been there."
Eleven officials looked at credentials and voted for a candidate who could make our county better. Nineteen of the elected representatives went on to vote for someone who admittedly did not know where "you people" come from.
We have a board of health that is out of touch. A local attorney (who is an elected trustee) was recently hired to represent them in an open-meeting lawsuit that is currently pending. How is that not a conflict of interest? You elect trustees to represent you and not to represent a board that is trying to take your rights away.
The board has ignored letters from the public and elected trustees requesting reinstatement of participation at the monthly meetings. Maybe it is time for our elected board to take a stand and replace the current health commissioner with one that can achieve forward movement to make this county one in which the residents can be proud of.
When will the citizens of Trumbull County wake up and decide that the status quo is not good enough?
