CORTLAND - Owen Howard Kane Sr., 89, of Cortland, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Gillette Nursing Home in Warren.
He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Ironwood, Mich., a son of the late John Clarence Kane and the late Philomene "Minnie" Vanderhagen Kane.
Owen had a degree in mechanical engineering and served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Kane worked as a self-employed lumberman, owning and operating Kane Lumber Co. for more than 40 years, and was a founding member and faithful parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland.
He was a hardworking man who took pride in any job he completed and who had an eye for detail. He enjoyed working with his hands and was capable of doing whatever he put his mind to.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Rita Cassidy Kane, whom he married on Sept. 20, 1945; three sons, Thomas G. (Luanne) Kane of Stafford, Va., Gerard F. "Gerry" (Lynda) Kane of Fowler and John C. (Anita) Kane of Somerset, N.J.; two daughters, Karen L. (Tom) Freed of Olmstead Falls and Mary R. (Robert) Kuchinow of Hilton Head, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Kane of McDonough, Ga.; and a sister, Eugenia E. "Betty" Baca of Warren.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Owen was preceded in death by a son, Owen H. Kane Jr., and by two brothers, John C. Kane and Lawrence M. Kane.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Carl Kish officiating.
Burial will be in the All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, where the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard will render military honors.
