Tue. 3:20pm: Local rep wants ban on outside pay

August 20, 2013

COLUMBUS (AP) - Two House Democrats are championing a proposal that would ban a sitting Ohio governor from receiving outside compensation, including from firms seeking state funds.

State Reps. Ron Gerberry and Nick Celebrezze said the bill being introduced today would also apply to other statewide officeholders. State salary, pension and retirement would be exempted from the ban.

The legislation comes amid concerns over job-creation tax credits that Republican Gov. John Kasich's administration awarded to subsidiaries of Worthington Industries over the past two years.

Kasich served as a director at the central Ohio steel processor until 2010. He received a series of deferred compensation payments from the firm through 2012.

The lawmakers said they'd like to see such payments held in a blind trust until the official leaves public office.
