RESTON, Va. - Dorothy F. Thomas, 100, formerly of Isaac Street, Niles, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Sunrise Assisted Living, Reston, Va.
"Dottie," as she was known to family and friends, was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Winston Salem, N.C., the daughter of Walter G. and Caroline Leinbach Yarbrough.
She was a member of the Niles First Presbyterian Church, serving as a past president of the Women's Association, and was a member of the choir.
A registered nurse, she graduated from the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia in the class of 1935. She was a past president of Trumbull County Medical Auxiliary, and was very active with the Trumbull County American Red Cross Chapter as a blood bank volunteer and as the past president of their local American Field Office Division.
As a professional and a lady, her kindness and compassion were a constant presence in her personality.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Caroline A. (George) Melnykovich of Herndon, Va.; her sons, William D. and Richard E. (April), all of High Point, N.C.; her grandchildren, Anthony, Luke, Kristen, William and Rachel; and her great-grandchildren, John, Kyle, Taylor and Carly.
She was preceded in death on March 13, 1982, by her husband, Dr. Densmore Thomas, whom she married July 8, 1939; and her three brothers, Edward, Walter and Whewell Yarbrough.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Niles First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cindy Carlisle officiating. Friends may call from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home. Friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park.
