PERRYSBURG - Roderick W. Best, 86, formerly of Niles, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the residence of his daughter.
Rod was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Niles, the son of Otis and Mary Devennay Best.
A 1945 graduate of Howland High School, he attended Kent State University.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he had been employed by Sherwood Oldsmobile and later owned and operated Best Auto Service on Main Street in 1958, moving to East Federal Street in 1963.
Mr. Best was a member of the United States Power Squadron. He enjoyed boating, camping and painting, following his retirement to Florida. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and attended spring training games.
Rod is survived by his wife, the former Shirley M. Hunt, whom he married Oct. 13, 1950; his sons, Leslie W. (Maggie) Best of Girard and Douglas E. (Kathy) Best of Niles; his daughter, Diana Lee (Paul) Szymanski of Perrysburg; his brothers, David N. (Barbara) of Howland and Duane G. (Suzanne) Best of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and eight grandchildren, Meghan, Mollylin, Chris, Casey, Joshua, Jacob, Jeremy and Janelle.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Robert P. McDermott Memorial Home with the Rev. Curtis Miller officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
Mr. Best will be honored by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard for his service to his country.
