NEWTON TOWNSHIP - Fire heavily damaged the home of a Trumbull County deputy sheriff on Saturday.
The home, at 3440 West River Road, about a mile south of Newton Falls, is owned by Maj. Harold Firster, according to the Trumbull County Auditor's website.
Officials confirmed Firster was at the residence, but he declined to talk to news reporters at the scene. Emergency staff said he was pretty shaken up.
They provided little information, but said the fire, which started around 5:30 p.m., was contained by 7 p.m.
A number of fire departments remained on the scene throughout much of the evening. Ohio Edison was also called in to address electrical lines.
The house is set back in a wooded area and cannot be clearly seen from the road. Several people carried cases of water bottles down the long driveway leading to the house after flames were extinguished.
No injuries were reported.
