WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Timely hitting and a solid start by Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Rob Whitenack pushed the Scrappers past Williamsport, 6-2, on Saturday.
Whitenack retired the first eight batters and ended up allowing zero runs on five hits while striking out two and not yielding a walk over six innings. The Mahoning Valley (6-7) offense provided plenty of support as all nine starters reached base. Tyler Booth led all Scrappers with three hits and an RBI. Nellie Rodriguez added two RBIs, and James Roberts and Claudio Bautista each drove in a run.
The Scrappers took a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to a Williamsport error and an RBI double by Rodriguez. Booth added a run-scoring single in the fourth, and Mahoning Valley plated two more in the sixth on RBI singles by Rodriguez and Roberts.
The bullpen held the lead as Jimmy Stokes, Harold Guerrero and Ben Heller combined to close out the game, allowing two runs - one earned - in three innings.
Mahoning Valley faces the Crosscutters in the series finale today. The Scrappers head to Jamestown before returning home July 4.
