WARREN - Robert P. Powell, 83, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Community Skilled Care Center.
He was born April 30, 1930, in Washington, Pa., the son of James and Ivy Dotson Powell.
Bob worked at Republic Steel, Peoples Ice, Grinnell Steel and Copperweld Steel before venturing out to open his own business in 1955. Bob owned and operated Audiax Communications for 45 years before turning the business over to his son, Richard, in ''2000.'' In 1994, he was appointed vice president of Lari-Jo Inc.
Bob was on the board of Hillside Hospital for 10 years. After leaving the board, he went on to get his private pilot's license.
He was very active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as commander of Division 7-14 and commander of Division V. Bob was then appointed captain for two years and then received a special appointment to retain the rank of captain for a third year. He hosted many district conferences in Cleveland and Erie, Pa.
Bob will truly be missed by all who loved and knew him for his love and compassion for life. It was once said by one of his dear Canadian friends that Bob never met a stranger, being the congenial person that he was.
He enjoyed boating, camping, traveling and tending to his roses and garden, which he was so proud of.
He married Thelma Godiciu (the girl next door) on Aug. 26, 1950, and they shared 62 years of wedded bliss.
He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma; his children, Richard Powell (fiancee Lorri Shaulis) of Warren, Edward (Autumn) Powell of Tacoma, Wash., and daughter Laura (Joseph) Custodio of Newbury Park, Calif.; nieces he raised, Suzie (David) Olgetree of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Mary Ann Questa; his grandchildren, Amanda Herbert of Warren, Ryan Alcantara of Newbury Park, Calif., Chad and Shanon Powell of Tacoma, Wash., Kayla and Mathew Powell of Warren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Roberta "Bobbi Jo" Powell.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Borowski-Staton Funeral Home, 962 N. Road N.E., Warren, OH 44483.
