ORCHID: To the City of Warren and Mayor Doug Franklin for the construction this summer of handicap restrooms at the Kinsman House. The exterior restoration of this historic home is fabulous. The planned interior work, including an elevator, will make it more appealing for the public.
ORCHID: To Warren City Councilman Jim Valesky, D-at large, for questioning why the city did not take action to stop the financial bleeding at Old Avalon Golf Course before the previous manager was more than $300,000 behind in payments and before the course fell into $100,000 worth of disrepair. Warren Mayor Doug Franklin and Safety Service Director Enzo Cantalemessa should provide an answer.
ORCHID: To kindergarten teacher and former Fowler resident Wendy Killian, for donating a kidney to 8-year-old student Nicole Miller.
ONION: To State Rep. Bob Hagan, D-Youngstown, for introducing a bill that would ban oilfield waste injection wells in Ohio. Hagan should instead be pressing the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio EPA for better enforcement and to allow for alternatives, such as Patriot Water's treatment process that, if approved, could result in significant employment gains in Hagan's district.
ORCHID: To Bristol fourth-grader Brooklyn Mullenax, 9, for designing a T-shirt commemorating Boston Marathon bombing victims and using the shirts to raise money for the victims.
ORCHID: To the Austintown Board of Education which, instead of spending money to tear down an old building, made money by selling it, twice. It kept a down payment after a buyer backed out and now has a $2.5 million deal with another buyer.
ONION: To Warren Councilwoman Helen Rucker for opposing the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative's outreach to residents of homes owned by Sunshine of Trumbull Inc. Sunshine properties face foreclosure, leaving many residents concerned about the future of their homes. The MVOC, which spearheaded the drive to close Warren's massage parlors after city officials neglected to, has a track record for successful civic engagement.
