I would like to address the family members of the teens who were killed in the March 10 accident. My sincere sympathies go out to each of you in this difficult time. But when I read the April 10 Tribune article, I was appalled and deeply disappointed in some of the family members who feel they deserve the remaining money in the Gifts for Our Children Fund, which was set up to help the families pay for the funeral expenses. The fund did just that and to profit from this tragedy is terrible and the sense of entitlement is shameful.
I believe the pastors are right in keeping the account open in the event of another tragedy in which someone else may need help. The money was donated by generous people across the country to help in a time of need, not just by the family and friends of our community. I don't believe that these same generous individuals would be opposed to use these funds to help another family cope with a hardship.
Please pay that generosity forward, which will show true gratitude to those who were so kind. Again, I am sorry for the loss and I know they will ultimately do the right thing.
