Officer, suspect shot in Middlefield

MIDDLEFIELD - One man is dead, and two officers were injured after a traffic stop Sunday evening, according to the Geauga County Sheriff's Office.

At 5:55 p.m., two Middlefield officers stopped a man's vehicle near State Avenue and Tare Creek. The driver exited the vehicle and shot at the officers while they were still inside their cruiser with a semi-automatic firearm, the sheriff's office said.

He shot the female officer in the hand and leg, while the male officer received a leg injury from shrapnel.

The officers returned fire, killing the driver. The female officer was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital, and the male officer was taken to University Hospital in Geauga, according to Geauga Sheriff Dan McClelland.

While the conditions of the officers are unknown, McClelland said he does not believe the injuries are life-threatening.
