MIDDLEFIELD - One man is dead and two patrol officers were injured after a traffic stop this evening, according to the Geauga County Sheriff's Office.
At 5:55 p.m., two Middlefield officers stopped the males vehicle near State Avenue and Tare Creek. The male exited the vehicle and shot at the officers while they were still inside their cruiser with a semi-automatic firearm.
He shot the female officer in the hand and leg, while the male officer received a leg injury from shrapnel.
The officers returned fire, killing the driver. The female officer was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital and the male officer was taken to University Hospital in Geauga, according to Geauga Sheriff Dan McClelland.
While the conditions of the officers are unknown, McClelland said he does not believe the injuries are life-threatening.
The officers' names have not been released, nor has the coroner identified the deceased male. The Geauga Sheriff's Office is heading the investigation is ongoing.
