‘Arts Mean Business’ workshops begin next week

February 28, 2013
Tribune Chronicle , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

The first in a series of events focusing on the business side of the arts is scheduled March 7 at the McDonough Museum of Art.

"The Arts Mean Business" is a four-part development series designed to help artists thrive. The first will be "What the Heck is an LLC?," from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the museum, 411 Wick Ave., Youngstown.

This session will address the basics of what the business structure of a Limited Liability Company (LLC) is how to start one, and how it could be beneficial to artists.

James S. Simon, a lawyer with Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP will be the speaker, and the workshop will be moderated by Cary Wecht, associate dean of Youngstown State University's College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Simon also will explore other possible structures, such as S Corp and 501(c)(3). He also will answer questions directly from artists who are considering starting an art-based business but have little preparation or knowledge.

The series is presented by YSU's College of Fine & Performing Arts and the community arts and cultural group Power of the Arts.

Other planned sessions include:

May 30 - "Arts Mean Business; Really, They Do!" at The Raymond John Wean Foundation, Warren, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Sept. 26 - "Sell What? Approaching Galleries and Agents" at The Raymond John Wean Foundation, Warren, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 7 - "Got Cash; Now What? Financial Issues for Arts Based Businesses" at the McDonough from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Registration is available at www.powerofthearts.org and by calling Wecht at 330-941-2337.

Parking for the March 7 session is available for a nominal fee in the M1 Wick Avenue parking deck.
