Man treated for gunshot wound
WARREN - A man shot early Friday morning at a residence on Garden Street N.W. was taken to a local hospital, according to police.
They said they do not believe his injury is life-threatening. However, there is a chance he may have been transferred to another hospital.
It is believed he was shot in the pelvic area.
His identity and the circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been disclosed. No other injuries were reported, and police did not say whether they have any suspects in the case.
Threat message found in school bathroom
CORTLAND - Police were called to a school after a threatening message was discovered.
About 1 p.m. Friday, school officials contacted Cortland police after a message was found on a bathroom stall in Maplewood Middle School, Superintendent Perry Nicholas said.
The message stated, "This is my school and I can shoot it up," Nicholas said.
"We didn't know how long it was there, and we immediately called the police. The police investigated, and they found that there was no threat," Nicholas explained.
Two officers questioned students and school officials and found there was no need to evacuate the school, he said.
Mosquito ice fishing tournament canceled
BAZETTA - The Mosquito Creek Reservoir ice fishing tournament set for Sunday has been canceled for safety reasons, according to David Hoheisel, tournament director.
"There's never safe ice," Hoheisel said, "but I just don't feel 100 percent confident."
The event had been postponed at least one other time, and Hoheisel said they will try to hold the tournament again next year.
Falls graduate moves up in fire division
COLUMBUS - Tod E. Whetzel, a graduate of Newton Falls High School, was promoted to the rank of captain within the Columbus Division of Fire on Feb. 11.
Whetzel, of London, joined the division in 1994 as a certified paramedic before being promoted to lieutenant in October 2006. His father, Kenneth Whetzel, was fire chief in Newton Falls from 1972 to 1999.
The younger Whetzel served four years in the U.S. Army and nine years in the Ohio National Guard. During his service he was awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal, three Army Achievement Awards and the Expert Infantry Award.
He lives in London with his wife, three children and one granddaughter.
Information forum for online school set
YOUNGSTOWN - Parents and students can learn about a tuition-free online public school.
An information session on e-school Ohio Connections Academy will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 11 at Fairfield Inn and Suites, 801 N. Canfield Niles Road, Youngstown.
Representatives from the school as well as teachers and parents of current students will answer questions about how the school works and the enrollment process.
Enrollment for the 2013-14 academic year begins Monday.
