St. Rose School will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Mary Ellen Britt, chair of the committee planning the anniversary, said the committee is planning two major events in September with a tea for students and former teachers and nuns from the school and a anniversary dinner.
The dinner has been set for Sept. 29 at Mount Carmel Hall in Youngs-town. Also planned that day will be a mass with Bishop George Murry at St. Rose Church followed by an open house at the school.
Britt said a capital campaign for the school has taken place in recent years with funds raised to help with getting a new roof and other improvements in the school such as a new floor for the gymnasium which is used for many events. She said plans are also for new doors for the school.
''We have had people already inquire about what is planned for the anniversary. There have been many improvements at the school with the anniversary celebration to be the icing on the cake,'' she said.
Britt said she received a call from an alumni in Florida who wants to attend.
The committee has between 1,500 to 1,600 alumni names on computer for those who attended or were part of the school.
The school was established in 1913 behind the church building off State Street in downtown Girard. The current school building was constructed in 1956 and a playground for the school sits where the school once was.
Britt said the school's gymnasium is one of the largest of any school in the Diocese of Youngstown.
Students from preschool to eighth grade attend the parochial school which has students attending from throughout the area.
Britt said the committee has met a few times and will be again throughout the year.
''We are currently looking for former teachers and students for the tea this fall. We were able to find all the nuns who worked there because most were with the Ursuline Sisters,'' she said.
Britt said the eighth-grade class this fall will mark the 100th graduating class from the school and will be part of the planned tea.
She said instead of the church's annual summer festival plans are for a large picnic.
