Phillip S. Mahan 1921-2013

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Dr. Phillip S. Mahan, 91, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.

He was born May 19, 1921, in Bristolville, the son of the late John Wesley and Corda Ridinger Mahan.

Phillip graduated from The Ohio State University, earning a doctoral degree in dental surgery. Phillip practiced dentistry in the Warren area for 45 years.

Dr. Mahan was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy in the Panama Canal Zone from 1945 to 1948.

He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Cape Coral, Fla., the Gordon Palmer Dental Society, the Ohio Gun Collectors Association, the Champals Investment Club and the Western Reserve 507 Masonic Lodge for 70 years. He was also a member of the Valley of Columbus Scottish Rite.

Phillip enjoyed boating and water sports on Lake Milton. He also enjoyed collecting guns, cut glass and watches, along with woodworking, making furniture and jewelry. He kept a large garden and worked in it every day.

Dr. Mahan was a car enthusiast, and he and his first wife, Marion, started Mahan's Imported Autos in 1955. He was also a longtime partner in the Jim Nickel Lincoln Mercury dealership.

Phillip is survived by a son, John P. (Carol) Mahan of Champion; a daughter, Michelle (Carl) Leonhart of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Phillip Saraceno of Cape Coral, Fla., Kathy Nees of Austintown, David (Pam) Mahan of Champion and Rebecca (Bobby) Mahan Miller of Champion; and great-grandchildren, Chayne Nees, Jonathan S. Mahan, Nicholas A. Mahan, Bret Robert Miller and Berlin Marie Miller. Also surviving are his second wife, Gertrude "Trudy" Toner Mahan, whom he married in December 2007, along with her children, Tim (Lisa) Toner of Texas, Tom (Holly) Toner of Florida, Tammy (Scott) Disbro of Florida and Theresa Toner of Florida, and eight grandchildren.

He married the former Marion Abler Sept. 5, 1943, and she preceded him in death October of 2006. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Karl and William; and a sister, Betty.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home, where there will be a Masonic service at 5:45 p.m., and again from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bristolville.
