NORTH CANTON - The LaBrae Vikings are not strangers to playing in showcases this season.
Already this year, the Vikings beat Ursuline in the Hope Classic High School Basketball Showcase in December, then fell to West Middlesex last week in the Lariccia's See Them Rise High School Basketball Showcase.
On Sunday at the Dunk 4 Diabetes Shootout at Walsh University, the Vikings completed their showcase swing on a high note - defeating Malvern 61-57 in overtime.
LaBrae jumped to a 17-7 lead, and though the Hornets outscored LaBrae in the second quarter, the Vikings went into halftime with the 30-24 advantage.
Though LaBrae led at the end of the third, Malvern wasn't ready to go home. The Hornets outscored the Vikings 20-9 in the fourth quarter to push the game into overtime. Part of the big turnaround for Malvern was the play of Trey Tucci, who had 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.
The game was tied in overtime before LaBrae's Marcel Richardson put the Vikings up with a fielder to give LaBrae the two-point lead. With less than a minute to play, the Vikings got a stop and the Hornets fouled LaBrae's John Richards, who hit both free throws to give the Vikings the four-point victory.
LaBrae coach Chad Kiser praised the play of Richardson, who scored 16 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Peyton Aldridge scored 12 for LaBrae and Carl Brown added 11.
The Vikings are now 11-3 and will take a few days off before hosting arch rival Newton Falls on Friday.
