YOUNGSTOWN Former world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik of Youngstown announced today that he is retiring from boxing.
Pavlik told WYTV 33 News that his decision is based mostly on worry about his future health. He said that although he has no immediate health issues, guys he fought with in the amateur ranks that are experiencing some issues.
Pavlik was scheduled to fight Andre Ward on Jan. 26 in Los Angeles in a Super Middleweight Championship bout in the main event of an HBO card. The fight was postponed until March 2 and finally canceled after Ward injured his right shoulder and had surgery that will keep him out of action likely until fall.
Pavlik said that also was a factor in his decision.
While he wouldn't completely rule out a return to the ring at some point, Pavlik told 33 News that he's 90 percent sure he won't be back.
