found following chase
WARREN - Police found a handgun and marijuana in an SUV that crashed following a short chase at Laird and Woodland about 1:40 p.m. Friday.
Police were looking for a car that was stolen in a robbery and when they found it and tried to pull it over, the sport utility vehicle fled before crashing into another vehicle, according to Tribune news partner Channel 33 news.
Arrested was the driver of the car, Chance Wells, 22, of Roosevelt Street N.W., on a charge of failure to comply, and a passenger, Charvell V. Smith, 23, of Sandpiper Trail, on charges of drug abuse and improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle.
They were both taken to the Trumbull County Jail.
Pair indicted in
home invasion
BOARDMAN - A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Doretha Weston, 36, and Keymonnie Harris, 22, of Campbell, for their involvement in a home invasion and shooting in Boardman.
The pair face two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of kidnapping and felonious assault, all with firearms specifications, according to a grand jury report.
At 5:30 p.m. Dec. 15, police said four people showed up at 61 Terrace Drive in Boardman when the homeowner, James Truman Sr., exchanged gunfire with Harris.
Former treasurer
pleads guilty
COLUMBUS - A former Democratic candidate for state auditor has admitted falsifying election documents.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that former Mahoning County treasurer John Reardon pleaded guilty this week to two misdemeanor charges of election falsification. Prosecutors said he listed false loans from his supporters to improve the image of his campaign coffers in 2006.
He was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
Reardon repeatedly denied wrongdoing in multiple interviews with FBI investigators. In court he said he believed at the time that his reports were filed properly but now accepts responsibility for what he called a "mistake."
Reardon eventually dropped out of the race and received $50,000 from the state party.
Shooting suspect caught
in Warren is back in N.Y.
NEW YORK - A man accused of killing his girlfriend's mother in New York City's first homicide of the year has been returned after he was captured in Warren.
Police say 25-year-old Raymond Mayrant of Queens was captured on Jan. 11. He was brought back to New York and charged on Friday with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police say Mayrant killed Elzina Brown on Jan. 3. Authorities say he also shot and injured his girlfriend, Brown's 22-year-old daughter.
Police in Maine allege Mayrant later stole a car from an unsuspecting father and daughter who apparently met him while asking for directions during a trip and gave him a ride to Maine.
Nominations sought for Community Stars
Nominations are being sought for the Tribune Chronicle Community Star program.
Now in its 12th year, the program celebrates the volunteers who have had a significant influence on Trumbull County, be it through tireless hours of service, random acts of kindness or a single moment of courage.
The 10 people chosen will be recognized in a special section published in the newspaper and treated to a banquet open to the community at W.D. Packard Music Hall on March 19.
