CONNEAUT -- Anthony West, 28, of Youngstown, will have a preliminary hearing Tuesday on a felony level assaulting a police officer charge stemming from his arrest outside the Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut earlier this week. Police suspect West and three other men with trying to smuggle contraband into the prison.
West is also charged with obstructing justice, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.
Co-defendants Jawann Evans, 35, and Brandon Miller, 28, both of Youngstown, and Cregg Vaughn, 39, of Ashtabula, are charged with obstruction of justice, the Star Beacon newspaper reported in this morning's edition. They are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 22.
Meanwhile, Conneaut Councilman at-large Neil LaRusch sent a letter to Gov. John Kasich asking for help patrolling the perimeter of the private prison because of increased attempts to smuggle contraband into it.
