Packard Band dances into the new year

Symphonic dance music will open the 2013 season of the W.D. Packard Concert Band.

Conductor Stephen L. Gage will lead the band in program that includes Samuel Hazo's "Arabesque," Ron Nelson's six-part "Courtly Air and Dances" and Clifton Williams' Symphonic Dance No. 3 - "Fiesta."

Vocalist Janel Darrin will make her Packard Band debut performing "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now." Darrin, who lives in Warren, is the director of children's ministries at Howland United Methodist Church and also teaches music for Arts Excel. She received her bachelor's degree in music and theater from Susquehanna University and her master's degree in vocal performance from the University of Akron.

Other selections include Jack Stamp's "Gavorkna Fanfare," Calvin Custer's Variations on "Scarborough Fair," Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" and Josef Strauss' "Radetsky" march.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust. For more information, call 33-841-2931.
