Burton gets animated with ‘Frankenweenie’

January 10, 2013
By ANDY GRAY Tribune Chronicle , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

New this week on DVD and Blu-ray:

"Frankenweenie" - An animated short that Tim Burton made in 1984 is the inspiration for this 3D, stop-motion animated feature about a boy who tries to bring his best friend his beloved dog - back to life. The voice cast includes Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan and Winona Ryder.

DVD buyers get a showcase on the "Frankenweenie" touring exhibit and a music video for Plain White T's song "Pet Sematary." Blu-ray buyers also get the original "Frankenweenie" short, the new animated short "Captain Sparky vs. the Flying Saucers" and the featurette "Miniatures in Motion: Bringing Frankenweenie to Life." (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray, $49.99 3D Blu-ray / Blu-ray / DVD / digital copy combo)

"Compliance" - Craig Zobel wrote and directed one of the year's best movies, inspired by the true story of a man who would call businesses and persuade the bosses that he was a police officer and needed them to conduct a strip search of an employee. It sounds like a ridiculous premise, but Zobel is able to ratchet up the tension and, with the help of excellent performances by Ann Dowd and Dreama Walker, creates a film that is both unsettling and plausible. (Magnolia Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"Hit and Run" - Dax Shepard wrote, directed and starred in this movie that is a throwback to the car chase movies of the '70s. He also gathered some of friends to star in it with him, including girlfriend Kristen Bell, his "Parenthood" co-star Joy Bryant and Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, Kristen Cheno-weth, Beau Bridges, David Koechner and Jason Bateman. Shepard plays a former getaway car driver who is in the witness protection program. He risks his anonymity to drive his girlfriend to a job opportunity in Los Angeles.

Extras include deleted scenes and the featurettes "Street Legal," "Run and Gun" and "Love on the Run." (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray)

"House at the End of the Street" - Between "The Hunger Games" and "Silver Linings Playbook," 2012 was a very good year for Jennifer Lawrence. Her starring role in this horror tale that received scathing reviews won't make her 2012 highlight reel. Lawrence plays a young woman who moves into a house with her newly divorce mom (Elisabeth Shue). Turns out bad things happened there years ago ... and are about to start happening again. (Relativity Media, $29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Dredd" - This film based on the comic book vigilante got much better reviews than the 1995 version starring Sylvester Stallone, but it didn't help at the box office, where the movie earned only $13.5 million in theaters. Karl Urban plays Judge Dredd, who serves as cop, judge, jury and executioner in a dystopian view of the future. Here he is in pursuit of crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Heady of "Game of Thrones") who is using a drug called slo-mo to help her take control of the city.

The disc includes a motion comic prequel and six featurettes, including "Mega-City Masters: 35 Years of Judge Dredd." (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $29.95 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Guns, Girls and Gambling" - Gary Oldman, Christian Slater, Dane Cook and Helena Mattsson star in an action comedy about a rare tribal mask stolen from an Indian casino in Nevada and a 6-foot-tall blond assassin. (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $19.98 DVD, $26.99 Blu-ray)

"Jack & Diane" - In this little cinematic ditty, both Jack and Diane are teenaged girls who fall in love with each other. But when summer's end threatens to separate them, it has potentially violent repercussions. (Magnolia Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"Stolen" - Remember when a new Nicolas Cage movie was a big deal? It wasn't that long ago. Nowadays, a new Cage film is just as likely to debut on DVD, like this film where he plays a thief who is trying to reconnect with his daughter after 8 years in prison. However, the daughter is kidnapped by a former partner who believes he hid $10 million before going to jail. Malin Akerman, Josh Lucas, Danny Huston and Sami Gayle co-star in a film directed by Simon West, who worked with Cage on "Con Air." (Millennium Home Entertainment, $19.99 DVD, $24.99 Blu-ray)

Stars James Buckley, Joe Thomas, Simon bird and Black Harrison provide a commentary track, and the disc also includes deleted scenes, bloopers and the featurettes "Making The Inbetweeners" and "Joe Thomas: Dangerman!" (Lionsgate Home Entertainment $26.98 DVD)
