KINSMAN - William John Mitchell Sr., 81, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013.
He was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Sharon, Pa., the son of Thelma Leona Moore and John Glascow Mitchell.
Formerly of Maysville, Pa., Mr. Mitchell was a Kinsman resident since 1965. On Jan. 30, 1949, he married Arlene Louise Sweitzer.
He was a millwright for National Casting of Sharon, Pa., for 28 years, and after his retirement he did maintenance for the Eastwood Mall for eight years.
Mr. Mitchell was formerly a member of Kinsman Presbyterian Church, a member of the Steelworkers union and the Maennerchor Club of Sharon. He enjoyed farming from the time he was young, raising animals and growing grain. Spending time with his children and grandchildren, in his garden or maintaining his lawn, is where he wanted to be.
Survivors include his wife of almost 64 years, Arlene L. Mitchell; three daughters, Virginia "Ginny" DeArment of Brookfield, Carol L. (Frederick) Smith of Berlin Center and A. Lucy (Ed) Root of Vienna; two sons, W. John (Sophia) Mitchell Jr. of Warren and Dennis W. Mitchell of Brookfield; two sisters, Barbara J. (Jim) Grueser of Murrysville, Pa., and Bonita (Al) Peterson of Fowler; a brother, the Rev. Robert D. (Beverly) Mitchell of Fort Myers, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He lost five brothers-in-law, whose surviving wives are Joan Sweitzer, Dorothy Sweitzer, Bonnie Sweitzer, Kathy Dunbar and Linda Allen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Delores Mitchell; and a brother, David Mitchell.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, where there will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Eric Mitchell officiating.
Burial will follow in Rock Ridge Cemetery in West Salem Township, Pa.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kinsman Volunteer Fire Department, the Kinsman Presbyterian Church or Southern Care Hospice.
