Kwanzaa events set through Tuesday

KWANZAA EVENTS SET: Kwanzaa is being marked through Tuesday with local events. Kwanzaa honors African heritage in African-American culture.

At 4 p.m. today, Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 328 S. Forest St., Youngstown, will hold a cultural and gospel celebration and pantomime, and at 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 505 Parkcliff Ave., Youngstown, will be ministerial interpretations of the Nguzo Samba (The Seven Principles), with music, choirs and cultural expression.

At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road, Youngstown, will be African-American vendors, music, dancing and poetry with the Harambee of Youngstown, and Karamu, community feast with those attending asked to bring a covered dish.

COUNSELORS SOUGHT: The Trumbull County 4-H youth program hosts a residential camping program for ages 8 to 13 and is seeking young men and women who would like to serve as a camp counselors. The camp is held July 28 to Aug. 3 at Camp Whitewood in Windsor.

Counselors are needed to teach fun and educational programs to youth as well as being a cabin counselor. Campers counselors need to be at least 14 years old. This is a voluntary position. Counselors do not need prior 4-H involvement.

Orientation for first-time counselors will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at The Ohio State University Extension Office in Cortland. There will be a series of trainings that run from February through July.

Applications can be obtained by calling the OSU Extension Office at 330-638-6783 or visiting trumbull.osu.edu, clicking "4-H Youth Development," then "4-H Camp." Applications are due by Jan. 10.

MYCAP OFFERS WINTER ASSISTANCE: The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership has several energy assistance programs available to Mahoning County residents. The programs are to help individuals and families who do not have any electric or gas service, or they have been notified there will be a disconnection of these services. Also, individuals and families who use bulk fuel are eligible.

The winter crisis program runs through March 31. Photo identification of all individuals 18 and older in the household must be presented, and disabled individuals must provide documentation of their disability.
