VIENNA - The Mustangs and the Rams needed an extra period to decide this non-conference game, but Mathews came out on top, 93-85.
The scored was tied with the seconds ticking down when Mathews' Aaron Suchanek made a 3-pointer to tie the game at 73. Mineral Ridge promptly answered, as Zac Hagy hit a jumper, giving the Rams the 76-74 lead with 14 seconds remaining. But that left too much time for Mathews, as Andy Morgan hit a layup with 2.4 seconds to go, sending the game to overtime.
However in the extra quarter, Mathews ran away with the game, outscoring Mineral Ridge 17-9.
Suchanek scored a game-high 32 points to pace Mathews (3-4). Morgan finished with 20.
Corey Phillips led the Rams (6-3) with 22 points. Hagy added 21 and Nathan Palmer chipped in 21.
CHAMPION 50, CAMPBELL 42: CHAMPION - Clay Hall scored a career high 32 points, scoring more than 50 percent of Champion's total, leading the Golden Flashes to their second victory of the season.
Champion trailed, 36-34, heading into the fourth quarter, but clutch free-throw shooting from Hall and teammate Chris Miller gave the Flashes the victory. Both were 6 of 7 from the line, scoring 12 of Champion's 16 fourth-quarter points. Miller finished with 10 points.
The Flashes are now 2-6 on the season and will take on Bristol tonight.
Jayle'll Shorter paced Campbell with 13 points.
CANFIELD 67, HOWLAND 64: HOWLAND - It was a back-and-forth contest between Canfield and Howland, with the Cardinals coming away with the road victory.
Both teams were effective from 3-point range. Canfield had seven 3s, five from Andrew Midgley. Howland totaled nine from behind the arc, four from John Mark Weisman, three from Evan Steele and two from Arbie Murray.
Weisman was the leading scorer with 21 points for Howland, which fell to 1-7 (1-2). Murray added 17 points.
Midgley led all scorers with 21 points. Jarrett Vrabel had 16 points and six rebounds for Canfield.
NILES 68, HUBBARD 40: NILES -Niles and Hubbard was a tight match-up in the first quarter, but soon after, the Red Dragons dominated the Eagles.
Niles led 15-12 after the first quarter and used a 24-8 second quarter to blow the doors open against Hubbard. Niles padded their lead by outscoring Hubbard 14-6 in the third quarter.
Ray Russ led Niles with 19 points. Kymone Gamble added 12 and James Tate chipped in 10 points for the Red Dragons. Hubbard was led offensively by Jordan Thompson as he led the Eagles with 10 points.
BOARDMAN 47, CARDINAL MOONEY 44: BOARDMAN - Coming down to the wire, Boardman edged out the win against Mooney for the Spartans' third win of the season.
Dylan Bosela was the leading scorer for Boardman with 15 points and Jamar Steverson added 10 for the Spartans. Cardinal Mooney's George Brandestein led all scorers with 17 points. Joe Cunningham added 12 points for the Cardinals.
LORDSTOWN 56, JACKSON-MILTON 43: LORDSTOWN - Lordstown jumped out to a 13-point first quarter lead and was on cruise-control for the rest of the game as they beat Jackson-Milton.
Preston Sutton paced Lordstown with 15 points and Jake Jones chipped in with 13 for the Red Devils. Jake McAdams led Jackson-Milton with 12 points and Jeremy Fitzpatrick added 8 for the Blue Jays.
BROOKFIELD 74, SOUTH RANGE 58 : NORTH LIMA - Brookfield's Jeremy Quinlan came to play as the Warriors won with ease against South Range.
Quinlan was blazing from the field, scoring 35 total points including four 3-pointers. He was hot early on, scoring 15 of Brookfield's 20 first-quarter points. Ryan Mosora added 14 points for the Warriors, and Derrick Dickson had 11.
Mason Miller led South Range with 14 points and Garrett Anderson chipped in 11.
URSULINE 58, EAST LIVERPOOL 44: EAST LIVERPOOL - Ursuline's Desmond McElroy scored 27 points and hit five of the Fighting Irish's nine 3-pointers in the championship game of the East Liverpool Potter Classic.
Ursuline (2-6) hit 9 of 17 from downtown overall, with Ryan Strollo - the tournament MVP - adding four, and used a big second-quarter run to pull away from East Liverpool (3-8). The Irish led by two after the first period and outscored the Potters, 18-9, to take a 32-21 halftime lead. McElroy, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 18 in the first half to lead the charge.
Hayden Cunningham paced East Liverpool with 14.
Linsly Academy beat Berkshire, 57-55, in the consolation final of the classic.
GIRLS ROUNDUP
WARREN G. HARDING 58, MAPLE HEIGHTS 37: MAPLE HEIGHTS - Harding got its second win of the season as the Raiders cruised to a 21-point victory over Maple Heights.
Rai'Ale Chatmon lead the scoring surge for Harding with 15 points. Audreyonna Balridge added 12 points for the Raiders. Cierra Jones had 12 points for Maple Heights.
Harding will try to go for its third win of the season as it faces Boardman on the road Wednesday night.
