RETIREES HOLD LAST MEETING OF YEAR: St. Joseph Hospital retirees will meet for breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Wayside Restaurant, Champion. Those attending are asked to bring a monetary donation in an envelope. It will be determined at the meeting which charity will be the recipient of the donations. There will be no speaker.
HOWLAND RETIREES PLAN MEETING: Howland Schools will meet for the first meeting of 2013 at 11 a.m. Jan. 8 at Enzo's. All classified and nonclassified retirees, spouses and guests are welcome. Cost of the lunch, payable at the door, is $10. Retirees who do not receive the newsletter / response card are asked to call 330-856-5226 by the Saturday prior to the meeting if they plan to attend.
There will be a collection of canned or boxed non-perishable "comfort foods," household paper goods, bar soap, and toothpaste for Emmanuel Center. Everyone is asked to bring one or two for the collection.
The group's yearly sponsorship of a scholarship through the Howland Community Scholarship Foundation will be discussed.

SENIORS TAKING STAND FOR SAFETY: Tod's Crossing, a National Church Residences cottages development located in Warren, offered ongoing education for seniors and their adult family caregivers as part of the Senior Safety School's S.T.E.P. UP! Safety Takes Every Person.
The graduation ceremony this month included guests from the Columbus home office of National Church Residences.
Students learned how to protect themselves from identity theft, financial fraud schemes and elder abuse, how to report a crime and what organizations were there for them they should fall victim to a crime, fall prevention, about how to prevent a fire in the home, and how to prepare for natural disasters, among other topics.

HOWLAND SCOPE OFFERS COMPUTER CLASSES: Computer classes (Windows computers) will be offered at Howland SCOPE, 8273 High St., Howland, starting Jan 3. Each class will run five weeks, with 90-minute classes, and include handouts to take home. The cost is $25 for the five classes to SCOPE members. For nonmembers, the annual membership fee is $15.
Those with notebook PC's are encouraged to bring their PC and take the class on their own computer. Bring and AC adapter.
The following classes are planned if at least four students sign up for it: 9:30 to 11 a.m. for beginners; and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those who already use the Internet but want to know more about email and Web browsing.

SCOPE CLUB HOSTS BASKET RAFFLE: The Niles SCOPE Senior Center Happy Tappers are selling raffle tickets to win several holiday baskets. The proceeds will benefit Dancing for Others, which will be held Jan. 26 at Packard Music Hall under the direction of Donna Crean. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5.

AARP NEEDS TAX-AIDE VOLUNTEERS: AARP Tax-Aide is a program of the AARP Foundation offered in conjunction with the IRS. This program provides free tax preparation and filing for seniors and other taxpayers with low to moderate income who need assistance filing their tax returns.
The program is seeking volunteers to assist in tax preparation for the upcoming tax year. The Trumbull County program takes place at 12 sites throughout the county. No tax experience is needed as training will be provided.
