WARREN - The closed post office in Farmdale is being studied by the U.S. Postal Service to determine if services there should be discontinued permanently.
The review of delivery and retail operations at the facility is part of USPS' process to decide if it will maintain a presence in Farmdale or continue delivery and retail services from the nearby post office in Kinsman. There is no real timetable for completion.
Home delivery service and retail operations were shifted to the office in Kinsman in July 2011 because of issues with standing water damage in the building's basement and mold, USPS spokesman David Van Allen said.
The office also has had a decline in usage, about 25 percent from 2007 to 2010, Van Allen said.
Van Allen said USPS rents the building at 5914 Mayburn Barclay Road, and there are no other locations in Farmdale that are adequate to be a post office. Also, there are no plans to erect a new building, he said.
The postal service will have representatives available at a Feb. 2 meeting to answer questions. The meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Gustavus Federated Church, 8849 state Route 193.
Written comments can be delivered to the Kinsman Post Office or mailed to District Discontinuance Coordinator, Northern Ohio PFC, 2200 Orange Ave., Cleveland, OH 44101.
