Eugene A. Smith 1939-2012

NEWTON FALLS - Eugene Allen Smith, 73, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, Dec 21., 2012, at Allan Dell Assisted Living in Newton Falls.

He was born on June 13, 1939, in Youngstown, the son of the late Oscar Smith and Agnes McCarthy Smith.

Eugene received his formal education from Youngstown Rayen High School graduating in 1957. He married Alma Jean Koches McKinstry on Aug 22, 1986, and they have enjoyed 26 years of wonderful marriage together.

He has lived in Newton Falls since 1986, but is formerly of Austintown. Eugene worked for Republic Steel as a pipefitter for 20 years, leaving there in 1981. Then Eugene went to work for K-Mart Distribution in Warren for 16 years, retiring in 1997.

He was a faithful member of Newton Falls First Congregational Church where he served as a deacon. Eugene also served as a chaplain at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren for two years.

Eugene was a coach and also an umpire in Austintown for many years. He was the manager for the Home Savings and Loan baseball team. Eugene was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the Western Reserve Coca-Cola Collectors Association.

Some of Eugene's interests included collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, watching the Cleveland Indians, model railroading and collecting toy fire engines. He also enjoyed participating in parades with his 1961 White Fire Engine.

Memories of Eugene will be carried on by his loving family, his wife of 26 years, Alma Jean Smith, of Newton Falls; daughter, Deborah (Donald) Anderson Jr. of Boardman; a son, David (Tina) Smith of Canfield; a brother, Garry (Audrey) Smith of Boardman; stepchildren, David J. McKinstry of Warren, Judy Papic of Anniston, Ala., and Roger (Teresa) McKinstry of Thompson, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carolyn Evans; and one grandson, Michael Smith.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church in Newton Falls with the Rev. Dr. Eric Bing officiating the service. Eugene will then be laid to rest in Newton Falls Cemetery.

The family has requested that all donations please be made to the Newton Falls First Congregational Church 612 W.t Broad St., Newton Falls, OH 44444, in memory of Eugene.
