Raiders down Warrensville Heights for first win of season

WARREN - Seven different players scored for the Raiders in a Lake Erie League victory over Warrensville Heights, 49-29.

The Raiders are now 1-6 on the season.

Maya Bell paced Harding with 12 points, and Troi Simpson was right behind with 11. The Raiders led, 25-17, at the half, and pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 14-5 advantage.

MAPLEWOOD 41, BERKSHIRE 23: BURTON - Maplewood's Allison Bell scored 13 of her game-high 15 points in a huge second half for the Rockets.

Maplewood (7-2) scored just eight points in the first two quarters, but the Rockets found their rhythm in the second half, outscoring Berkshire, 33-16. Miranda Sloan scored 11 points and handed out six assists for Maplewood, which hosts Cornerstone Christian on Thursday.

Berkshire scored the first seven points of the game but didn't record another bucket until the third quarter. Kayla Byler led the Badgers with 11 points.

LaBRAE 53, LIBERTY 45: LEAVITTSBURG - The Vikings put together a clutch fourth quarter to outlast Liberty in an All-American Conference, National Division matchup.

LaBrae was up one entering the final period and outscored the Leopards, 18-11, to pull away. The Vikings made 22 of 30 free throws compared to 9 of 17 for Liberty.

Three players scored in double figures for LaBrae, led by Ashlee Stubbs' 16 points. Lauren Rutherford added 12, and Sadie Sutton provided 10.

Liberty's Leah Leshnack scored a game-high 19 points, and Rachel Crum contributed 16.

NEWTON FALLS 47, SOUTHEAST 44: PALMYRA - It came down to the wire, but Newton Falls battled back and came away with the non-conference victory over Southeast.

After leading the entire first half, the Tigers fell behind in the third quarter and entered into the final period trailing by two. However, the Tigers rallied and took a one-point lead. With 20 seconds left, Newton Falls' Dannie King nailed two free throws to put the game away for the Tigers. King finished the game with a team high 18 points. Hannah Zelle added 15. Newton Falls is now 6-1.

Shayna White led Southeast, which fell to 6-3.

SOLON 84, HOWLAND 39: SOLON - The Tigers kept it close in the first quarter, but the second was the downfall for the Tigers in a non-conference loss to Solon.

Howland trailed by seven after the first, but were outscored 24-5 in the second.

Jordan Entler paced Howland with 12 points and three assists. Gabby Cvengros had nine points and five rebounds.

Howland (5-4) is back in action Dec. 27 as it hosts Niles.

MATHEWS 68, NILES 44: VIENNA - The Mustangs turned a 19-11 deficit to a 26-16 lead at halftime en route to their victory over Niles.

Dayna Ellis was a big part of that second quarter, scoring 11 of her 17 points in the quarter. Dana Omerzo led Mathews with nine assists. Natalie Halavick and Jacki Rhine led Mathews with nine rebounds each. The Mustangs are now 5-4 on the season.

Katrina Davis led Niles (3-6) with 16 points. Megan Morris added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

GARFIELD 55, CHAMPION 49: CHAMPION - The Golden Flashes jumped to a 10-point lead, but couldn't hold on against Garfield in non-conference action.

The G-Men started chipping away in the second quarter, reducing the lead to five at half. Garfield outscored champion 30-19 in the second half.

Melody Bright led the G-Men (3-5) with 12 points and three assists. Jackie Tabor added 11.

Champion's McKenzie Kiser led all scorers with 28 points. She added nine rebounds. Champion is now 4-4.

WRESTLING

Liberty places fourth at Huron Duals in Sandusky: The Liberty High School wrestling team placed fourth out of 10 teams at the Huron Duals on Saturday.

The Leopards finished 3-2, beating Wickliffe, 47-28, Smithville, 45-36, and Ashland, 40-36. They lost to Norwalk St. Paul (67-12) and then fell to Huron, 51-27, in the consolation finals.

Key winners for Liberty were Tyrell Jethrow, who went 4-1, Cody BuCher (3-2), Juwan Milhouse (3-2) Dai'Quen Greene (3-2), Brandon Jefferson (2-2) and Danaryll Green (2-0).

Liberty wrestles next at the Jackson-Milton Tournament on Jan. 5.
