HOWLAND - Marilyn Herman Elston Bates, 80, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Lake Vista in Cortland.
She was born June 20, 1932, in Warren, the daughter of Raymond I. and Irma Blair Herman, and had lived in the Warren area all her life.
A 1950 graduate of St. Mary's High School, Marilyn had been owner / operator of Elston Concrete in Warren, and worked for 12 years as office manager for Jimmy Chieffo's Restaurant.

An active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, she had served as a Eucharistic minister and as a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
She greatly enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are five children, David E. of Warren, Mark R. (Tammy) of Vienna, Peggy Elston of Howland, Joann M. (Michael) McBane of Cazenovia, N.Y., and Bobbi (Michael) Andreatta of Dayton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack T. (Lynn) Herman of Nashville, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Herman of Springfield, Mass.
Preceding her in death are her first husband, Robert E. Elston, whom she married Sept. 16, 1950, and who died June 5, 1965; her second husband, Richard E. Bates Sr., whom she married July 18, 1970, and who died in 2003; two sisters, Irene Herman Skinner and Alice Herman Modic; and four brothers, Robert I., Ted R., C.J. and Charles J. Herman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, with Fr. Thomas Eisweirth officiating. Interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lane Family Funeral Homes-Roberts-Clark Chapel, and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made either to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road N.E., Warren, OH 44483, or to the donor's favorite charity.
