Orchids & onions

December 8, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

ORCHID: To Newton Falls Village Council for passing income tax forgiveness to residents in 2013. The forgiveness applies to residents who pay an income tax to another municipality in which they work.

ONION: To the residents who used to live on Hamilton Street where nine animals were found dead last month. Warrants have been issued for Michael Kelley and Tiffany Charleton for nine counts of animal cruelty. Five dead dogs and four dead kittens were removed from the property at 2518 Hamilton St. S.W. on Nov. 28. Only one lucky dog survived.

ORCHID: To the Niles Police Department for quickly releasing an image of a man suspected of robbing a Cash Advance story. The prompt release, especially to local media, helps the public protect itself and arms citizens with a tool they can use to help police catch perpetrators.

ONION: To the person or persons responsible for dumping medical records along abandoned railroad tracks in Niles. The records contained patients' personal information including names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. They were old medical records from different area doctors' offices from the 1950s to the mid-1990s. In this world of identity theft, how can that happen?

ORCHID: To the more than 100 area schools recognized this week for educational achievements, including 37 in Trumbull County. It was part of the annual Excellence in Education - Celebrating our Schools luncheon held at the Mahoning Country Career and Technical Center in Canfield. The awards banquet was hosted by Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership. There also were more than 100 building principals recognized in Trumbull, Mahoning, Ashtabula and Columbiana counties.

ORCHID: Upon the passing of longtime community volunteer and retired Champion dentist Dr. Bernard Schultz. He passed away this week at Heritage Manor in Youngstown. He was active with Beth Israel Temple in Warren and Temple El Emeth in Liberty. He also was active in many community organizations and groups including the American Cancer Society and American Red Cross.
