‘Dark Knight’ rises on Blu-ray

"The Dark Knight Rises" - This is billed as the final Batman film for both co-writer/director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale. If both stay true to their word, it's a satisfying finale, an enjoyable, ambitious film, but also one with little detail that break the mood and keep "The Dark Knight" as the pinnacle of the trilogy. New characters played by Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle / Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), Marion Cotillard (Miranda Tate) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt join the deep cast that includes Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman. Blu-ray extras includes a multi-part making-of documentary called "Ending the Knight" and a nearly hour-long history of the different incarnations of "The Batmobile." (Warner Home Video, $28.98 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo)

"Hope Springs" - Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones star as a long-married couple in a rut that turns to relationship therapy (led by Steve Carell) in a movie that is more drama than the comedy-heavy commercials implied. Director David Frankel contributes a commentary track. Other extras include a gag reel and the featurettes "An Intimate Look at Making Hope Springs," "An Expert's Guide to Everlasting Passion," "The Doctor Is In: Steve Carell on Dr. Feld" and "Inside the Perfect Marriage: Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $30.99 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray)

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" - Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton play a couple having trouble conceiving a child of their own. They bury a list of all the qualities they would like in a child and then they meet Timothy Green, a boy remarkably like their dream child. Dianne Wiest, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, M Emmett Walsh, David Morse and Common co-star. DVD extras include five deleted scenes and a music video for Glen Hansard's "The Gift." Blu-ray buyers also get a commentary track by director Peter Hedges, a making-of featurette and a profile of Hansard and his end credits song. (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" - Nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards and a possible Oscar contender, this drama looks at life in the Louisiana bayou through the eyes of a 6-year-old girl. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Butter" - Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell, Hugh Jackman, Rob Corddry and Alicia Silverstone are part of the ensemble cast for this comedy/satire about about the battles and bickering at an Iowa butter-carving competition. (Anchor Bay, $24.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"Samsara" - This documentary, shot over five years in about 25 countries, has been compared to such acclaimed visual works as "Baraka" and "Koyaanisqatsi" as it explores everything from natural wonders and scenes of destruction. (MPI Home Video, $27.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray)

"V/H/S" - The premise for this horror anthology is a group of burglars are sent to a house to steal a videotape. What they find are a dead body and a box of videos, each with a different story to tell. (Magnolia Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"Finding Nemo" - One of Pixar's best films makes its Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray debut following its theatrical re-release earlier this year. New bonus features supplement previously available DVD extras, and the set includes deleted scenes, a filmmakers' roundtable discussion and 3D aquariums. (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, $39.99 three-disc combo/$49.99 five-disc 3D combo)

"Fred 3: Camp Fred" - I never would have guessed that Lucas Cruikshank's 15 minutes of YouTube fame would have lasted long enough for him to make three movies and have a series on Nickelodeon. Go figure. Cruikshank's Fred Figglehorn is tormented at summer camp by an evil counselor but finds a way to have a memorable summer. The movie co-stars Daniella Monet and features appearances by John Cena and Tom Arnold. Extras include three featurettes. (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $14.98 DVD)
