Two plays for the holidays

Youngstown Playhouse will celebrate the season with a double feature in the Moyer Room.

The one-act drama "Not on This Night" will be followed "Carla's Holiday Cabaret," an evening of music featuring Carla Gipson and a rotating cast of singers.

Dylan White will direct "Night," a three-character play that takes place in France in 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. A French woman, alone on Christmas Eve, is startled by the arrival at her farmhouse by two lost soldiers, one American and one German. The only thing that can stop a violent confrontation is her determination and goodwill.

"'Not on This Night' is a short holiday play, about 45 minutes," Gipson said. "That would be the first part of the evening, but we knew we needed something else so we came up with this idea."

She said "Carla's Cabaret" will offer a variety of holiday music and performances, including possibly some comic relief.

Gipson said she'll be singing such numbers as "The Christmas Song" and "My Grown-Up Christmas List," but the program will be different each night depending upon who joins her.

The schedule still was being solidified earlier this week, but Gipson said James McClellan would perform Friday and Saturday, Geri DeWitt will perform Saturday, Rachell Joy will sing Sunday, and Liz Rubino will join her on Dec. 15.

"We have a good array and assortment of holiday songs," Gipson said.

Show times are at the Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens. For reservations or more information, call 330-788-8739.
