DEAR EDITOR:
It is Christmas time, which is the holiest time of the year, but you'd never know it by the way shoppers act in the stores. I saw a news video where two guys were fighting over lingerie. Imagine that? We fight over the dumbest things and we want other countries to stop fighting.
Some towns don't want to upset anyone so the Nativity, which often was placed on public land in the town, will no longer be shown. Some clerks in stores aren't permitted to wish a "Merry Christmas." I think people have lost all perspective and common sense. I grew up a different time, which I am glad I did. We had simple things. We had enough to eat, a good home, loving parents and family who gathered to just enjoy each other. Each year more and more people are buying more "stuff" and each year we lose what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. It is shameful.
Greed is rampant in the United States. I don't begrudge anyone who makes a fortune. What I don't like is the wealthiest CEOs of companies not treating their employees fairly. Would it matter so much if Papa John's who made $44 million profit, to give his employees health care? This would cost the company between $5 million and $8 million. This still leaves quite a nice sum for profit. If he gives health care, he would have to raise the price of pizza around 15 cents. What? He lives in a 45,000-square-foot mansion. Before you say good for him, think about what he won't do for his employees to better their lives just a little.
I think the Hostess company is the same way. The owners would rather see an 82-year-old company with 18,000 employees go bankrupt than give a little just to keep people working. I hope I am quoting this correctly, "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter into Heaven."
