Youngstown State University jazz groups will play two concerts next week as the end of the fall semester approaches.
YSU Jazz Ensemble 2, directed by Kent Englehardt, will perform at 8 p.m. Monday. The concert will include music by Charlie Parker, George Gershwin and Ernie Wilkins. Vocalist Katelyn DeLaduratey will join the ensemble for three Duke Ellington songs.
The evening also will feature music generated from two of Engelhardt's research projects. Music from jazz composer Ernie Wilkins was created in "The Restoration And Preservation Of Historically Significant Jazz Masterworks" with research assistant Mark Higgins. Music from Engelhardt's research professorship titled "Musical Contextualization Of Charlie Parker's Solos With The Jay McShann Orchestra" will feature a different saxophonist on each piece. The School of Graduate Studies And Research at YSU funds both research projects.
The YSU Jazz Combos will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Led by Dave Kana, Ken Karsh and Jeff Bush, the combos will perform jazz standards and original works by students Kevin Snyder, Nate Gelfand, Rob Chase and Nick Sainato.
Both concerts take place in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center, and admission for both shows is free. For more information, call the Dana School of Music at 330-941-3636.
