PITTSBURGH - Rayshawn Goins scored 21 points and Charles Cooke knocked down two free throws with 8 seconds showing to help James Madison rally and beat Youngstown State 69-68 Tuesday.
It was the only lead of the game for the Dukes.
This is the first loss against James Madison. YSU beat James Madison at home and at Harrisonburg, Va.
Alioune Diouf had 15 points, Cooke finished with 11 and Andre Nation added 10 for the Dukes in the subregional round of the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic.
YSU senior forward and Warren G. Harding graduate Damian Eargle led the Penguins with 17 points, while Blake Allen had 14 points. Kendrick Perry, who was this week's Horizon League Player of the Week, and teammate Shawn Amiker each had 12 points, while Kamren Belin added 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Eargle also became YSU's all-time leading shot blocker with six on Tuesday. He also went over the 1,000-point mark for his career early in the second half.
Eargle's six blocks brought him to 223 for his career. Ricky Tunstall held the previous record since 1984 with 221.
However, for the fourth straight game, the YSU bench was anemic - scoring three points.
Since the Penguins, who have lost two straight, opening with a 80-73 win at George Washington where Bobby Hain had 19 points and D.J. Cole added 12 off the bench, YSU hasn't got that same mojo outside of its starting five.
YSU scored seven points at Georgia, four vs. St. Francis (Pa.) and five in Monday's overtime loss to North Dakota State.
James Madison (1-2) trailed 66-60 with 59 seconds to play before Nation and Cooke made back-to-back shots to cut the deficit to two, 66-64.
Allen, who missed two free throws after Cooke's jumper closed the gap to 66-62, converted both free throws this time to extend the Penguins (3-2) advantage to 68-64.
But Diouf hit a fast-break 3-pointer with 23 seconds left, and Youngstown State missed a layup and a tip-in on the other end. Eargle fouled Cooke after Ron Curry's rebound, setting up his game winning free throws.
YSU ends this third straight game at Duquesne University with tonight's game against the host Dukes, starting at 7 p.m.
