SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Agnes Benita Vahey, 76, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.
She was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Niles, the daughter of John and Agnes Cassidy.
Agnes Benita earned her degree in education from Youngstown State University, where she met her loving husband of 53 years, Thomas J. Vahey. She taught math and English in the Youngstown area until taking on the role of devoted mother.
Her caring manner, patience, enduring strength and selfless love were shared with everyone, making her an inspiration to many. Agnes Benita also enjoyed spending time with fellow members of the Youngstown Garden Club, Engineering Auxiliary and the Lake Central Concessions Volunteers.
She enjoyed baking delicious treats like pies and cakes, owned U-Can-Do, through which she shared her skill and love of candy making, and enjoyed researching family genealogy. She was loved by many. Although she will be sadly missed, her memories will be treasured forever.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Vahey; children, John (Joahna) Vahey, Jean B. Vahey, M.D., James W. (Minh) Vahey, M.D., Edward P. (Imelda) Vahey, D.M.D., M.S., and Barb (Dick) Lulay; grandchildren, Celeste, Ernest, Gage, Breana, Grace, Hannah, Matthew, Nicole, Jason, Kristina, Matthew, Patrick, Caitlin and Riley; a brother, John James (Georgia) Cassidy, Ph.D.; and numerous other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Frances Cassidy, and her parents.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 8580 Wicker Ave., St. John, Ind. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by the Rev. Ted Mauch officiating a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Schererville, Ind. Prayer service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria, Ill.
