Warren man beaten with his own cane

WARREN - A local man reported that he was beaten with his own cane while taking his trash out on Tuesday.

According to reports, Steven Foster, 54, of Ward Street N.W., told police he was attacked around 1 a.m. He told police he was blindsided and not able to see the person who took his cane and beat him with it.

YSU building closed after chemical spill

YOUNGSTOWN - A chemical spill inside Youngstown State University's Ward Beecher Hall forced an evacuation of students and faculty around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WYTV 33 News.

The approximately one-gallon spill happened as a student was transporting hydrochloric and phosphoric acid on the building's fifth floor. A glass container holding the hydrochloric acid fell and broke as the cart being used to transport the chemicals fell over. One student was injured with a minor splash burn.

The building was in the process of being ventilated Tuesday night after emergency crews neutralized the spill. The Youngstown Fire Department and campus officials responded to the incident.

Classes in the building were canceled for the night.

Power outage affects Cortland and Bazetta

BAZETTA - Residents in the Bazetta and Cortland areas were without power early Tuesday evening almost a week after parts of the same areas lost power.

Robin Patton with Ohio Edison said a fuse failed in the State Routes 46 and 305 area, affecting Bazetta, Fowler and Howland townships and the city of Cortland.

She said the power was out around 7 p.m. before being restored about 35 minutes later to more than 500 residents who were in the dark.

The same area had a recent weekend outage in Cortland and Bazetta that left customers without power for several hours.

Crews battle barn fire Tuesday in Howland

HOWLAND - Several local fire departments were called to a Tuesday-night barn fire at 3529 Basswood Ave. off North River Road.

Scanner reports indicated possible combustibles, such as propane tanks, in the barn, but no such damage was reported.

A Howland Fire Department spokesman said crews from Howland, Champion, Cortland, Bazetta, Warren Township and the Vienna Air Reserve Station were called out to the blaze around 7:15 p.m.

Damage estimates were not available.

Groups host discussion on the war on drugs

NILES - A talk regarding the myths and facts of the war on drugs will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Perkins restaurant on state Route 46 in Niles.

The talk is part of an effort by Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and Trumbull Campaign for Liberty to educate the public on the damages of a failed war on drugs.

Former prosecutor and LEAP member Patrick Nightengale will discuss facts and statistics regarding drug addiction as well as LEAP's stance regarding the legal system and its affect on the problem.

Dinner will precede the talk at 6 p.m. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended by calling 330-646-2107.

Neighborhood group to meet on safety issue

WARREN - Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership will hold a public meeting at 3 p.m. Friday at the Sunrise Inn Banquet Room to discuss crime and safety issues in the city of Warren.

All residents are invited to attend.
