Jene Kathryne Hillyer Angel 1952-2012

TOPEKA, Kan. - Jene Kathryne Hillyer Angel, 60, formerly of Warren, passed beyond the veil Nov. 10, 2012, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 27, 1952, in Warren, the daughter of Kenneth N. and Carole Ferguson Hillyer.

A graduate of Warren Western Reserve High School, Jene went on to earn her bachelor of arts at California University and her master's at University of Colorado. She taught special education for 20 years and teacher education at Washburn University. She served as the first director of Kansas Families for KIDS, the executive director of Kansas Adoptive and Foster Families and was the safety manager at Goodyear and Amazon.

Jene was gregarious, outgoing and known for her acerbic wit, organization and love of crowds. She loved animals and traveling, and enjoyed bass fishing, NASCAR, water skiing, singing and sewing. She met her introverted, quiet husband in college.

Ultimately, Jene was devoted to family, friends and her faith.

Jene is survived by her mother; sister, Holly Grayling; and brother, David Hillyer. She leaves her husband, Stephen Angel; children, Troy, R. Pattrik, Ashlei, Arislyn, Anna and Aubrie; and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Topeka Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2401 S.W. Kingsrow, where a viewing will be held from 5 to 5:40 p.m. prior to services.
