For children, time to demand answers

November 11, 2012

DEAR EDITOR:

There are a few things in life as terrible as when a child is molested. Every caring heart is horrified when they hear this happened to an innocent child.

The incidents that happened over the years at the Children Services agency are truly alarming. They demand an outcry from good, decent people from all over our community.

I realize the good, generous work that is done by many at Trumbull County Children Services agency. But I also see what happens when good people sit silent, when our Family Court judges do not act as true guardians of our children and, most importantly, when an agency starts worrying more about their reputation than they do about the children in their care.

Foster parents fill the void for children that might not otherwise find the love and care that they richly deserve. Foster parents do it because they love children. And because of that love of children, we must do everything we can to protect those children who cannot protect themselves.

We ask everyone to join us in a call for complete information on how children have been mistreated and abused during time spent under the Children Services agency. We must all ask what the judges of Family Court knew about the abuse and why they did not act aggressively to protect the children. We must also have a full accounting of what other public officials knew about the abuse and why they sat silently. The board of children services must open up the information. We all have a right to know. Only with full knowledge can we prevent this from ever happening again.

To do less shames our community. For the love of children, now is our time to demand answers.
