Orchids & Onions

November 3, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

ORCHID: For the Lordstown-built Cruze as it helped GM's small car division to a 72 percent increase in sales compared to a year ago. It was the third straight month that more than 19,000 buyers took delivery of a Cruze. It is a top-seller car for GM. The good news came just days after Consumer Reports magazine listed the Cruze - for the first time - as a "recommended buy" among small cars.

ORCHID: To RTI International Metals Inc., which reported strong third-quarter 2012 financial results this week. Net income doubled over the same quarter last year. The Pittsburgh-based company has operations in Niles.

ONION: For all the political signs stuck in the ground on public rights of way. They look trashy and are especially ugly when they are still up weeks after the election.

ORCHID: To the office of orthodontists James Martuccio and Brad Bauer for hosting its fourth annual Operation Gratitude, a national program in which orthodontists buy back kids' Halloween candy with cash, coupons, toothbrushes and other items. They then donate the candy to U.S. troops deployed overseas.

ORCHID: To the Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education and The Turning Foundation as they are accepting applications for the third annual Innovative Teacher of the Year Award. The committee is seeking ''creative teachers who are using 21st century teaching skills to enhance their students' classroom experience.'' The top prize will be a Turning Technologies Student Response System for the teacher's entire class.

ORCHID: For the Warren Family Mission holding its fifth annual Harvest Party. About 300 kids and their parents walked around 10 fun stations in the mission playing pumpkin rolling contests, ring toss, egg balancing acts and other activities. It was especially nice this year due to the rain, wind and cold temperatures the area has been experiencing.
