Thu., 6:30 p.m.: Brookfield still unsure of opponent

The Brookfield High School football team might have a new playoff opponent for this weekend.

According to a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court ruling this afternoon, Ashtabula Edgewood is out and Beachwood is in as Brookfield's opponent.

The decision is based on Cleveland JFK forfeiting a game against Cleveland John Adams because a player did not meet Cleveland Metropolitan School District academic eligibility standards. However, since the district's standards are more strict than Ohio High School Athletic Association standards, the Cleveland JFK victory was upheld in the OHSAA playoff standings.

Cleveland Heights High School sued because it defeated John Adams during the season and would receive second-level playoff points for a John Adams victory over Cleveland JFK. Judge Richard McMonagle agreed and ordered the OHSAA to recognize the forfeit.

That decision would allow Heights to replace Mayfield in this week's Division I playoff game against Lakewood St. Edward.

Since Ashtabula Edgewood defeated Cleveland JFK, the court ruling would take away Edgewood's second-level points for JFK's win over John Adams. That would put Edgewood behind Beachwood in the OHSAA Div. IV playoff standings.

The OHSAA has not confirmed a playoff change. A spokesman said directors are meeting to ``figure out our options.''

Brookfield athletic director Tim Taylor was just made aware of the situation today and was "totally taken off guard." Now, Brookfield just sits and waits, likely until Friday morning, to know who and when they will open up with in the 2012 playoffs.

"I have no answers, we are sitting on our thumbs over here just waiting," Taylor said. "How do we prepare? Do we still sell tickets? Were just kind of waiting until someone says whats going on."
