Kaplan Duo brings sisters to YSU for recital

The Kaplan Duo will perform Sunday at Youngs-town State University.

The piano duo featuring sisters Nanette Kaplan Solomon and Iris Kaplan Rosenthal plays an eclectic repertoire and often uses the four-handed piano technique. The sisters have performed at many Long Island venues and have appeared in concert series at universities and music schools on the East Coast. They performed at the Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the International Alliance for Women in Music and performed at the College Music Society Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Rosenthal received her early training at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division. She received her bachelor of music degree from the University of Michigan School of Music and both her master's and doctoral degrees from New York University. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S. and abroad. In addition to the Kaplan Duo, Rosenthal has performed chamber music at a number of Long Island venues with the Elysian II, a cello-piano collaboration as well as with other Long Island musicians.

Solomon performs frequently as soloist and chamber musician. She has presented lecture-recitals at the College Music Society national meetings in numerous U.S. and international cities. She has been a soloist with orchestras in Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, as well as featured artist with the Butler (Pa.), Youngstown and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras. She is a founding member of the Slippery Rock Piano Trio, as well as the Kaplan Duo. She received her early training as a scholarship student at the Juilliard School. She received her bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude from Yale, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Her master of music degree was earned at the Yale School of Music, and her doctor of musical arts degree was earned at Boston University School for the Arts.

Sunday's concert will include the world premiere of Stephen Barr's ''When Men Are Fairy Tales in Books Written by Rabbits,'' an Overture for Four-Hand Piano. Other pieces for the four-handed piano include ''The Civilian Barber'' (Overture for Piano Four Hands) by Peter Schickele and ''Ring-a-Ding-Ding'' for Piano Four Hands by Ricky Ian Gordon. Other pieces by Mozart, Dvorak, Bernstein and Mendelssohn will be included.
