Niles man dies in industrial mishap
NORTH JACKSON - The Mahoning County Coroner's Office plans to do an autopsy today on a Niles man who was killed Tuesday in an industrial accident at Extrudex Aluminum.
John J. Tomlin Jr., 21, died in the accident at the Mahoning Avenue plant about 3 p.m.
Jackson police Chief Carl Frost said Tomlin was killed and another person injured after a set of metal racks fell on them. Frost did not have the name of the person who was injured.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is investigating. A spokeswoman at the OSHA office in Cleveland said an investigator had been assigned to the case and was at the plant Tuesday.
Man charged
in standoff
WARREN - The suspect in a Monday afternoon standoff with police has been charged with aggravated menacing.
Maurice Bryant, 24, 146 Kenmore Ave. N.E., is accused of shooting a pellet or BB gun at a van driven by an employee of an appliance rental business, then keeping police at bay for nearly one hour.
Martha Doyle of Vernon Sales and Rental said she arrived at Bryant's home to repossess a television. After a brief confrontation, according to reports, pellets were fired at Doyle's van, hitting the windshield near her head about 2:30 p.m.
Officers surrounded the house after Bryant and two others refused to come out of the house. Kenmore, between East Market Street and Montclair Street N.E., was closed to traffic for less than an hour while a negotiator convinced Bryant and two others to come out of the house. The other two people in the house have not been charged.
It was not immediately clear when Bryant may appear in court.
Woman attacked when in shower
WARREN - A 27-year-old Warren woman said she was in the shower when she was attacked by an intruder in her home Tuesday morning.
Anne Perunko of Oak Knoll Avenue S.E. told police a man punched her in the head, causing her to fall backward and hit the back of her head on the wall about 8:30 a.m.
She told officers she heard the attacker alert someone else in the house - ''Let's get outta here.''
Perunko's bedroom was ransacked and several pieces of jewelry missing, police said. Reports also indicate about $40 was stolen from the woman's wallet inside her purse that was on the kitchen table.
Police said pry marks on the rear door of the home showed how intruders got inside the house.
Perunko told officers she didn't need any medical treatment.
