WARREN - Providing the ''ultimate adventure'' for boys, the Royal Rangers Outpost 2 in Warren is marking its 50th year and is also currently the longest continuing running outpost in northeastern Ohio district.
Senior Commander Chris Christofis said the Royal Rangers, while similar to other scouting groups, provides mentoring to boys from kindergarten to high school and is sponsored by a church.
Christofis said the local outpost took part in the national camp event held in Missouri, which was attended by 6,000 Royal Rangers.
''Our members received gold medals which is similar to Eagle Scout award,'' he said.
In addition to the local outpost, which meets at First Assembly of God, there are also outposts in Kinsman, Hubbard, Poland and Lake Milton.
''We strive to give the boys a moral compass while they enjoy the outdoors and many different activities,'' he said.
Christofis said while some of the boys are members of the church, others are from local Warren neighborhoods. He said his own son, who is now an adult and pastor, went through the Royal Rangers program.
Christofis said this year marks the 50th anniversary of Outpost 2. He said the outpost also has the distinction in northeastern Ohio of being the longest continuing running outpost.
The boys take part in fundraising such as dinners held at the church, as well as derbies with racing vehicles and other event where they learn new skills, earn achievement awards and have a personal relationship with Christ.
Michael Cain of Southington said his two sons, Samuel, 13, and Joshua, 12, have taken part for many years.
''I started when I was in first grade. I like going camping and being in the outdoors. There are many fun things to do while we are learning about God,'' Joshua Cain said.
Nathan Dech, 12, of Ravenna, said he enjoys the camping experience.
He and Drew Wright, 11, of Bainbridge, don't mind coming to Warren to be part of the Royal Rangers, he said.
Royal Rangers aims to provide Christlike character formation and leadership development for boys and young men in a fun environment.
